Chitin is a tough, semitransparent carbohydrate that is the main component of an arthropod exoskeleton. It is a naturally occurring polymer derived from glucose, which is found in many forms of life. As well as being found in arthropods, it is the primary component of the cell walls of fungi, and in the bristles of annelids.
